Return of not-like-anyone-else guitarist Alex Turnquist, with his first LP in many years, and first for VHF since 2012’s Like Sunburned Snowflakes! A prodigious and unique talent, Alex’s guitar work has been mostly off-road over the years, eschewing “American Primitive” styles for more unusual avenues. From the startling virtuosity and extended techniques of his debut Faint At the Loudest Hour to the hypnotic Reich-like repeating figures and tuned percussion of Hallway Of Mirrors, Alex has challenged himself to constantly change and evolve, while still maintaining a remarkably skilled and inventive hand on guitar. On Moon Tulip And Her Invisible Systems, he tackles a kind of ambient dreamscape, with recognizable 12 string guitar picking quickly giving way to billowing clouds of drift. “Moon Tulip” starts Side 1 with a winsome repeating fingerpicked guitar motif, with a drone slowly rising behind it, segueing into the Eno-esque ambience of “Glitter Lick.” “As We Near The Approach” closes the side with woozy organ tremolo.  On Side 2, Alex’s guitar opens “Hidden Chrysalis,” joined by Liam Singer’s piano, Zubin Hensler’s trumpet, and Otto Hauser’s subliminal percussion in a beautiful locked-groove forward motion. The lengthy “At One Point We Could See Through The Trees” closes the LP with another dose of beautiful ambience that rewards close listening with tons of small details moving in and out of the sound field. First press on purple vinyl that complements the striking cover design perfectly.
